Phlebotomy Classes in Virginia: Programs and Certification (2027)

Most important takeaways…

  • Virginia does not license phlebotomists; national certification is voluntary but expected.
  • Community college phlebotomy programs run about 10 weeks and cost near $3,000.
  • Virginia phlebotomists earned a median annual wage of $46,340 in May 2025.

Phlebotomy training in Virginia is a short certificate or diploma, not a degree. Most programs run 4 to 16 weeks and 40 to 200 hours, and community college career studies certificates carry much of that enrollment.

The credential that matters afterward is national. Virginia does not license phlebotomists, so employers screen on the NHA CPT, ASCP PBT, AMT RPT or NCCT NCPT, and which exam you choose determines the supervised draws you must complete first.

Cost separates the routes: community college workforce programs price near $3,000 before subsidy, and private options vary, a 48-hour course at Phlebotomy USA in Glen Allen lists $1,895.

Best Phlebotomy Schools in Virginia, Ranked

Most phlebotomy training in Virginia runs through community college career studies certificates, which means the differences between programs come down to location, how the clinical hours are arranged, and what the credential actually costs after aid. The schools below are the ten strongest options in the state for 2026, spanning a self-paced online course, a paid hospital apprenticeship, and a dozen traditional campus programs. Across the Virginia schools offering this program, institution-wide graduation rates land between roughly 32% and 47%, useful backdrop but not a verdict on any single phlebotomy certificate.

Cheapest Phlebotomy Programs in Virginia

The Virginia community colleges below carry the lowest school-wide net prices among the phlebotomy programs on this page. Net price is what a typical student receiving aid pays for a year of tuition, fees, books and living costs at that college, not the sticker price of the phlebotomy class alone, so read it as a cost-of-attendance signal rather than a program quote. Lengths and credentials vary, from a single-semester career studies certificate to a two-semester sequence.

Community College, Private Training Center or Hospital Program: How to Choose

The three routes into phlebotomy in Virginia differ less in what they teach than in how they are priced and how the clinical hours are arranged. Community colleges tend to be the cheapest per credit and assign you a lab site, private centers trade length for a higher sticker price, and hospital programs bundle an internship that can run longer than the classroom portion. Wherever you enroll, confirm the school is accredited and that its curriculum covers the live draws your national exam requires.

How Long Phlebotomy Training Takes and What It Really Costs in Virginia

Virginia Western Community College runs its workforce phlebotomy program in 10 weeks, and several other Virginia community colleges price comparable programs at about $3,000 before any subsidy. Those two figures are a good baseline for planning.

Program Length

The fastest route is a workforce-style program like Virginia Western's 10-week course, which requires a high school diploma or GED.1 The same college also offers a 16-credit academic certificate. It requires clinical participation, immunizations, screening, and a minimum age of 18. Community college listings do not consistently publish classroom and clinical hour totals, so ask each school for its exact split before you enroll. Clinical draws affect your finish date more than classroom time does.

What the Total Bill Includes

Price depends on which track you choose.

  • Tuition: Virginia Western's academic certificate lists in-state tuition of $3,065.60, an estimate that can change, plus a $50 per credit career and technical education fee on eligible courses. The workforce program is estimated at $3,000.
  • Fees and screening: The academic certificate lists $89 for a background check and drug screen. The workforce program folds both into tuition.
  • Supplies: Books run about $180, medical requirements about $150, and clinical attire about $25 on the academic track. Scrubs are separate in the workforce program.
  • Exam fee: The NHA CPT exam is built into Virginia Western's workforce tuition. The academic certificate leaves certification exam cost to the student.

Financial aid on the academic track typically does not cover medical requirements, screening, or clinical attire, so budget for those yourself.

Funding That Can Lower the Price

VCCS FastForward is the biggest source of financial help. Under the standard subsidy, an eligible student pays one-third of the cost, $1,000 on a $3,000 program.2 The average out-of-pocket cost across FastForward programs is $801, though it varies by program and assistance level.2 Virginia Western, Central Virginia, Laurel Ridge, and Southside all list the $1,000 FastForward price.5

Two other sources can lower it further:

  • G3 or FANTIC: Virginia Western and Laurel Ridge list a $0 student price for those who qualify.3 Income and documentation requirements are not uniform statewide, so ask the college what you would need to show.
  • Tobacco Commission Grant: Central Virginia lists a $500 price under this grant.4

FastForward requires Virginia domicile, meaning residence in the state for at least one year with intent to remain, and a determination form is part of registration.2 Seats and assistance are limited and may go first-come. If you do not complete the program, you may owe one-third of the cost to the Commonwealth. WIOA may also help, but eligibility and amounts are set locally, so ask your regional workforce board and the school's admissions office before assuming it will apply.

From Enrollment to Employment: The Virginia Phlebotomy Path

The path into phlebotomy in Virginia is short and orderly. You pick a program, finish the classroom and lab hours, complete your supervised draws, pass a national exam, then start applying. Each step depends on the one before it, so a delay at the clinical stage pushes everything after it.

Five ordered steps from choosing a Virginia phlebotomy program to clinical draws, national exam, and job applications

Where Virginia Phlebotomists Work

Hospital work and reference-lab work ask different things of you. Hospitals offer variety and a route into the wider lab. Draw sites offer volume, steady hiring and more predictable schedules. Most Virginia graduates end up in one of four settings.1

Hospitals and Health Systems

Large systems such as Inova, Sentara, VCU Health and Carilion employ phlebotomists on inpatient floors, in emergency departments and at outpatient draw stations. Bon Secours lists outreach laboratory and lab assistant-phlebotomist roles in Richmond and Petersburg. Hospital-contracted work exists too: a current Quest posting in Roanoke covers inpatient, outpatient, physician-office and emergency settings, with both venipuncture and capillary collection.

Reference Labs and Draw Sites

Quest Diagnostics and Labcorp both run patient service centers across the state. Quest recently posted a full-time Phlebotomist I opening in Lexington (Monday to Friday, 9:00 PM to 5:30 AM) and announced a November 10 hiring event in Norfolk for full-time, part-time and float roles serving Newport News, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. A Fairfax Labcorp listing was full-time with a 20-hour weekly minimum.5 Some Labcorp postings in Chesapeake, Onley and Fredericksburg have since closed, so check current openings.6

Blood Centers and Clinics

The Red Cross has listed donor-center roles in Manassas and Richmond, and Inova Blood Donor Services has listed a Sterling opening. Several of these postings mention paid training. Plasma operators such as CSL Plasma, BioLife and Grifols also hire donor phlebotomists, sometimes without prior experience. Outpatient clinics and physician-office labs hire phlebotomists too, though no complete statewide directory exists.

What This Means for New Graduates

Blood centers and plasma operators are the most likely to take people with little experience. Quest and Labcorp postings often ask for training or a clinical draw record. Your externship site can become your first employer, so choose a program whose clinical partners match where you want to work.

What Virginia Phlebotomists Earn

Virginia phlebotomists earned a median annual wage of $46,340 in May 2025, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics data released in 2026. The middle half of the state's roughly 3,600 phlebotomists earned between $40,010 and $49,900, and the statewide average was $46,890. National BLS figures put the median at $21.75 an hour, which places Virginia close to the U.S. midpoint, though pay shifts by region, so check the metro where you plan to work before comparing offers.

Phlebotomy in Virginia: Common Questions

Virginia keeps its rules simple, but the training details still trip people up. Here are the answers we field most often from readers comparing phlebotomy classes in Virginia.

Does Virginia require phlebotomists to be licensed?
No. Virginia does not license phlebotomists at the state level, and no state license is issued for the role. Certification is voluntary, but most Virginia employers expect it: hospitals, reference labs and blood centers typically want a national credential before or shortly after hire, and the ASCP PBT is the one they request most often.
Can you take phlebotomy classes online in Virginia?
Partly. Several programs use hybrid formats, with lecture online and labs, live draws and clinical rotations in person. Virginia Western blends evening labs with online coursework, Inova runs a 10-week hybrid with a two-week in-person externship, and NOVA pairs Zoom lectures with on-campus labs.1 No fully online path exists.
Are there accredited phlebotomy schools in Virginia?
Accreditation varies by program type. Sentara RMH School of Phlebotomy reports NAACLS accreditation, and both Inova and Sentara hold SCHEV certification in Virginia.2 Community college programs fall under their institutions' regional accreditation. Ask each school directly which approvals its phlebotomy certificate carries before you enroll.
Which phlebotomy certification do Virginia employers want?
The NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) is the one most Virginia programs prepare you for, including Virginia Western, Tidewater and Virginia Peninsula.3 Some schools point toward the ASCP Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) instead, such as Central Virginia.4 Check the job postings you are targeting and confirm the exam your program supports.
